Solar Site Design Competes in US Department of Energy Program, Represents Cutting Edge of Solar Revolution

According to Entergy, the project is one of a few across the country which harnesses solar energy and stores it in state-of-the-art battery technology. “This project will allow us to study the feasibility of utility-scale solar energy here in New Orleans and also the extent to which battery storage can help compensate for the intermittency of sunlight,” Rice said. Rice said cloud cover, proximity to the Gulf Coast and thunderstorms are factors that pose an issue with solar energy in the South. While blue skies and sunlight isn’t always guaranteed, it’s more frequent in certain areas of the country. Combining solar panels with battery technology could help to alleviate the issue of climate and weather conditions in the South, Entergy said. The joint technology could determine the ability to deliver solar energy to a certain array of customers. According to Entergy, the project is part of a plan approved by the New Orleans City Council, which outlines how the company plans to provide energy in the future. The two groups meet on a three-year basis to discuss future proposals. Entergy officials did not provide a timeline for the project.
